Musonius Rufus
Roman Stoic teacher, mentor to Epictetus ยท 1st century CE
๐ Their story
Musonius Rufus was a practical Stoic teacher who believed philosophy should show up in everyday choices: how we eat, how we speak and how we treat one another. He taught that girls and boys are equally able to learn virtue.
๐ฏ What children learn
- โWhat you do each day matters more than what you say you believe.
- โEveryone in the family can practise wisdom, not just adults or just boys.
- โFood, money and comfort are tools, not the point of life.
- โLearning how to handle frustration is part of growing strong inside.
๐ Amazing facts
- โ Musonius was exiled more than once for speaking his mind but kept teaching anyway.
- โ He believed women should receive the same philosophical education as men.
- โ His surviving teachings focus on very practical topics like food, work and marriage.
- โ His student Epictetus carried many of his ideas forward.
